As his involvement with the play and his love for the lead actress grows, his hitherto strong resolutions and moral principles are severely put to the test. Set in Sydney Cove, 200 years ago, an upright man is in charge of staging a play and, in so doing, helping convicts to reform. The author's book "Schindler's Ark" was the winner of the Booker Prize in 1982 whilst his novels "The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith", "Gossip From the Forest" and "Confederates" have all been shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
